One way of reading the Psalms...

In the light of Christopher Ash's teaching (when he spoke to us in January- see also his excellent book, Teaching Psalms), here's one way to approach the Psalms... (it will work better for some Psalms than others, and you may not have time each day to do more than just read and pray, but have a go)...
1) UNDERSTANDING THE "LYRICS"
Read the Psalm through, and particularly see if there are resonances a) with the life of David (especially if the title/superscription links to him), and b) also thinking through what the Psalm looks like on the lips of Jesus. c) What does it mean for us as Christians (in Christ) to sing it?
2) LEARNING THE "TUNE"
Have a look at the kind of Psalm it is. Is it a lament, praise, doctrine? Is there a flow through the Psalm. A change of tune halfway through? Don't just analyse the teaching, but feel the emotion.
3) UNDERSTANDING THE "COMMITMENT"
What would it mean to sing this?  A song expresses a worldview and can be mean more personally than just whistling a tune. (EG what would it mean to sing a Man United football song in Liverpool!?)
4) NOW SING IT!
In the light of all the above get singing. If you find a musical version anywhere, send us a link!
